S.I.T.
Stay. Interact. Trust.
In the quiet of sitting together, trust is born
Many dogs in public shelters have endured neglect and/or abuse, plus the trauma of abandonment. These experiences can lead to deep-seated fear and mistrust of humans, making rehabilitation and adoption challenging. SIT addresses this by providing consistent, non-threatening human interaction, which is crucial for:
-
Reducing anxiety and stress levels
-
Encouraging positive associations with people
-
Improving chances of successful adoption
-
Enhancing overall well-being of the dogs

Our Mission
SIT is a volunteer-driven initiative, dedicated to helping shelter dogs who are fearful or traumatized, rebuild trust in humans. By simply sitting quietly in their kennels, volunteers offer a calming presence, allowing dogs to approach at their own pace and fostering a sense of safety and connection.

Be the Change
Your calm presence and a handful of treats can be the first step in a shelter dog’s journey toward trust—and ultimately, adoption.
Gentle Presence in the Kennel
Volunteers bring a foldable chair and spend time in the kennels without forcing interaction. The focus is on being present, allowing dogs to observe, approach, and engage on their terms.
Treats as a Bridge to Connection
For dogs who are food-motivated, we also use special treats as a gentle tool to build trust. Offering a treat at the right moment can encourage curiosity, create positive associations, and help bridge the emotional gap between fear and connection.
The Path to Healing
Over time, this compassionate method helps dogs become more comfortable with human presence, laying the groundwork for deeper socialization and training. Trust built this way can be the first step toward a forever home.
